UWS soccer teams enjoy mixed successVolleyball team goes 4-0 in Texas
The University of Wisconsin-Superior soccer teams enjoyed mixed success in their season-opening weekend.
Both Yellowjacket teams played in the St. Scholastica’s Advantage Emblem Cup, with the men going 1-0-1 and the women 0-2.
The Yellowjacket men defeated the Concordia College Cobbers 3-0 on Friday, then battled to a 1-1 tie with Loras College on Saturday. Both games were played at Public School Stadium in Duluth.
In Friday’s victory, UWS got goals from juniors John Levenick and Chase Carey and sophomore Karl Schmidtke.
With two minutes to play in the first half, the Yellowjackets lost Ryan Linsmayer to a leg injury. The sophomore from Dresser, was taken from the field on a stretcher and transported to a local hospital.
On Sunday, Pat Langan scored in the final minute of play to give Loras College a 1-1 tie against UWS. The game ended after one overtime session due to lightning.
Ben Royce scored for the Yellowjackets on a penalty kick in the 51st minute, and Matt Elder made five saves to put UWS on the brink of pulling off the upset.
Loras, from Dubuque, Iowa and ranked No. 2 in the country, defeated St. Scholastica 2-1 on Friday.
UWS is back in action at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Augsburg.
The ’Jackets will also play Gustavus Adolphus at 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Nebraska Wesleyan at noon Sunday. Both games are in Oshkosh.
The UWS women lost to Augsburg 10-1 on Friday and to Loras 7-0 Saturday. Both games were played at the Superior High School soccer fields.
On Friday, Olivia Muyres led the Auggies with three goals, and Miranda Garrelts scored for the Yellowjackets.
Loras College took control of the Saturday’s game late into the first half and never looked back, beating the Yellowjackets 7-0.
UWS goalkeeper Allie Pagie had 15 saves.
The Lady ’Jackets host Crown College at noon Saturday.

The University of Wisconsin-Superior volleyball team opened its season by going 4-0 at the University of Dallas (Texas) Invitational.
The Yellowjackets won a pair of five-set matches on Saturday, defeating Millsaps College (25-27, 25-16, 21-25, 25-18, 15-9) and Dallas (25-19, 23-25, 25-18, 19-25, 15-11).
Against Millsaps, UWS seniors Kitty Tynen (16) and Brooke Vonasek (15) combined for 31 kills and junior Keely Deadrick tallied 32 set assists. Tynen also had 15 digs and Jessica Zimmerman added 10 kills and 12 digs.
Defensively for the Yellowjackets, Lauren Peterson led the way with a match-high 28 digs. Deadrick and Walerius each added 15 digs.
Against Dallas, the Yellowjackets got 48 set assists from Deadrick and 15 kills from Alissa Autio. Tynen added 14 kills and 20 digs and Peterson had 23 digs.
UWS opened the tournament Friday with 3-0 wins over Sul Ross State University (Texas) and Dallas.
In a 25-7, 25-21 and 21-18 win over Sul Ross State, Vonasek led the Yellowjackets with seven kills and four blocks. Autio added seven kills, Deadrick had 28 set assists and Peterson added eight digs.
UWS defeated Dallas 25-11, 30-28 and 25-23.
Deadrick topped her performance of the first match with 36 assists and four aces. Tynen added 13 kills, Zimmerman had nine kills and Vonasek had seven kills and four blocks. Defensively Tynen and Zimmerman had 16 digs apiece, while Peterson added eight.
The Yellowjackets return to action Friday and Saturday at the Macalester Invitational in St. Paul.
On Friday, UWS will play Macalester at 6 p.m. and Northland College at 8 p.m.
On Saturday, the 'Jackets play Morris at 10 a.m. and Carleton College at 2 p.m.
