Logan Kittelson’s goal on a penalty kick in the second overtime gave the Superior High School boys soccer team a 4-3 win over the Osceola Chieftains Thursday afternoon at the SHS soccer fields.
Felix Leck set up the kick when he was tripped in the box. The Spartans had Kittelson attempt the penalty kick and he placed the ball into the lower left corner while Osceola’s keeper dove the other way.
“The boys played well and moved the ball around well,” SHS coach Jack Hajewski said. “If there are a couple of things we need to work on, it’s getting quicker and our decision making. But this game showed that we’re able to come together as a team and pull out a tough game.”
The Spartans built a 3-1 lead on two goals by Derek Copperud and one goal by Felix Leck.
Zachary Rausch, who scored for Osceola less than two minutes into the second half, scored again in the 63rd minute.
Osceola tied the game and forced overtime when Drew Lindh scored with 11 seconds remaining in regulation.
“It was off a throw in,” Hajewski said. “Lindh beat our defender and put the ball inside the post on the left side.”
Connor Gray finished with 17 saves for the Spartans, who attempted 22 shots on the Osceola goal.
The Spartans (2-2) play again at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Hermantown.
