The girls golf season has begun in Wisconsin, and the Northwestern Tigers once again expect to chase the Hayward Hurricanes.
“They’re the team to beat until somebody beats them,” said Steve High, coach of the Northwestern High School girls golf team.
Hayward has dominated the Heart O’ North Conference recently. In 2012, the Hurricanes swept conference opponents to claim the conference championship. The Northwestern Tigers finished second last year, while the Superior Spartans finished fifth.
The Hurricanes have also made two straight trips to the WIAA Division 2 state tournament. In 2012 they finished third as a team, but this year they will be without top golfer Brittany Neff, who led Hayward at state with a sixth-place finish.
The Tigers return four letter-winners from last year’s team. Senior Molly Lattery takes over the No. 1 spot with the graduation of Gwen LaPole. Lattery was named to the 2012 HON All-Conference team.
Senior Reggie Semanko and juniors Lyndi Graff and Marissa Delvas also return from last year’s varsity squad.
“The good news is that they’re all back and they can help our younger golfers,” High said. “That takes the pressure off (the new golfers). They can learn at their own pace and develop their skills.”
Newcomers to the team include five freshmen and one sophomore. Macy Meteraud, who sat out last season due to a nagging wrist injury, is also back to finish out her senior season with the Tigers.
Northwestern opened the season at the Barron Scramble on Aug. 16. The Tigers placed third with a 68. Spooner, which finished just behind NHS last season, won with a 64.
On Tuesday, the Tigers began conference play when they hosted Ladysmith and Luck.
“We opened up the season with two conference victories, which is not a bad thing,” High said.
The NHS golfers finished with a score of 186, Ladysmith had 214 and Luck had 247.
It was a team effort for the Tigers, as all four scoring golfers finished under 50. High said he can’t remember the last time that happened in a season-opening meet.
Leading the way were Graff and Delvas who tied with Ladysmith’s Haley Seifert at 46 for medalist honors. Semanko and Lattery both carded 47s for Northwestern.
The Tigers played in the Hayward Invitational Thursday and host Spooner, Superior and St. Croix Falls on Monday.

Kayla Chilstrom begins her first year as head coach of the Superior High School golf team with a young team hoping to compete in the HON Conference.
Four players return for the Spartans: juniors Samantha Aune, Amanda Hinaus and Allie Shober and sophomore Hailey Gronquist. Superior has no seniors out for golf this season.
“These players will have a huge impact on the success of the team this season,” Chilstrom said. She said all four girls were key players in 2012 and will be looked to as leaders this year.
New to the team are junior Natalie Helgerson, sophomore Halie Mackie and freshman Jazmine Wills.
“I expect us to compete daily whether it is at practice or a match,” Chilstrom said. “We have a great group of girls this season who bring a lot to the table. These girls are hard-working players who give 110 percent effort at every practice and match no matter the circumstances. They spend extra time at the range before practice, after practice or play the course on our days off.”
Superior opened its season Tuesday at Hayward with Barron. Hayward won with a team score of 185, and Superior finished second with a 260. Barron did not have enough players to register a team score.
