Bayside Baptist Church is opening its gardens to members of the community who want to pick their own fresh produce.
From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursdays and at 11:30 a.m. Sundays, anyone can drop by the church, 3915 N. 16th St., to take part in this free “farmers’ market.”
Church members put in 10 community garden plots this spring and invited Billings Park neighbors to use them.
“We wanted to do something that could reach out to and bless and provide kind of a unique opportunity for the community,” said Pastor Mark Pavola of Bayside Baptist. “It allows us to get to know our neighbors a little better.”
Although five plots are being farmed by families, the church has five additional plots filled with fresh, growing produce to share.
“The garden is producing like crazy,” Pavola said, and church members want to continue their outreach by giving it away to others.
The free farmers’ market runs through mid-September.
