The Superior High School boys soccer team begins a new season tonight with a new coach at the helm.
Jack Hajewski takes over for Gabriel Mozzini, who coached the Spartans to a 6-11-1 record during the 2012 season. Hajewski, who played collegiately at UW-Superior, was an assistant coach under Mozzini with the Spartans last year.
“The season is looking good,” Hajewski said. “We have a lot of kids coming back, they worked hard in the offseason, are looking to increase theIR number of wins and go fUrther in the playoffs,” Hajewski said. “I expect that this season will be better because we have fast kids and their movement off the ball has changed from last season to this season in a short matter of time. They are also dedicated to making this season better by working hard in the preseason and having a hungry attitude for the season.”
The new coach got a glimpse of his team at Monday night’s Lake Superior Conference jamboree at Duluth Denfeld. He’ll get to see the Spartans in action for real when they play at Spooner at 6 p.m. today.
Leading the charge into the season will be sophomore Logan Kittelson, who was all-conference honorable mention as a freshman. Helping out with experience and leadership will be seniors Felix Leck, Cody Anderson, Noah Peterson, Andrew Anklam, Daniel Seipke, Matthew O’Shaughnessy and Ryan Campbell.
“We have a lot of prospective starters that can make the varsity squad,” Hajewski said. “The boys came to practice ready to work hard and prepare for the season, which makes it hard for a coach to come up with a varsity roster because I look for skillful players with dedication and heart, and there are a lot of them on the team. That makes it hard to just say who is going to be a starter.”
While speed and the ability to move the ball are Superior’s strengths, Hajewski isn’t dwelling on any weaknesses.
“It’s not because I don’t focus on the weakness of the team, but I’m always teaching the kids on how they can improve their weaknesses,” Hajewski said.
Hajewski sees Ashland and Duluth Marshall as the teams to beat in the LSC. He also sees his Spartans nipping at their heels for a spot in third place.
“I feel that we have a solid team put together with speed, movement off the ball and last but not least, dedication and heart,” Hajewski said. “As for Ashland, the Oredockers know how to move the ball around and they have some solid defenders. Marshall has good coaching, they had a lot of all-conference players and they know how to play the game in a different style.
