Byrne will be a senior for the Yellowjacket men this combing season, while Linzmeier will be a junior for the UWS women.
The USA DIII basketball teams began their Brazil Tour 2013 in Orlando, Fla. on Sunday. After team orientation and practices in Orlando the team departed for Sao Paulo, Brazil on Tuesday.
Both teams will play doubleheader games today, Wednesday and Thursday in the state of Sao Paulo vs. selected club teams from the region. On Friday the teams travel to Rio de Janeiro for their final games on Saturday. The team will depart Brazil Monday evening and return to Orlando next Tuesday afternoon.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for two of our best basketball student-athletes at UWS,” UWS athletics director Steve Nelson said. “This is an once-in-a-lifetime experience for them and I wish them all the best as they compete for Team USA.”
The teams are made up of selected NCAA Division III basketball players from across the USA. The teams consist of players that have been recognized as all-American, all-region and all-conference. Players and coaches represented have led their teams to conference regular season, conference tournament and region championships. With a couple of team member’s schools reaching the NCAA Division III Final Four.
While in Brazil the teams will experience educational, cultural and social aspects of Brazilian life through school and sports club visits. While in Rio the teams will be staying on the famous Copacabana Beach (that just hosted Pope Francis with over a million people on the beach to see and hear him) and touring the Christ the Redeemer Statue and Sugar Loaf Mountain, two of the most recognizable landmarks in the world.
