Northwestern holds off Brewers to win Babe Ruth championship
Northwestern won the Superior Youth Organization Babe Ruth championship with an 8-6 win over the Brewers Thursday night at Morrie Arnovich Field.
The Brewers had forced a second championship game in the double-elimination tournament with a 12-11 win earlier in the evening.
David Bethards was the winning pitcher in the deciding game for Northwestern with help from Tanner Klobucher and Drew Stribley. The three allowed four hits with 11 strikeouts and 11 walks.
Austin Slaviero, Drew Magdzas and Hunter Hockenbrock pitched for the Brewers, allowing 16 hits with one strikeout.
Klobucher led Northwestern on offense, with a 4-for-4 performance. Carter Spangenberg and Bethards added two hits and three RBIs apiece; Stribley and Dylan Schiff added a pair of hits each; Sam Martinson tripled; and Pablo Eisenhauer doubled.
Hockenbrock had two hits and Brett Austin and Magdzas had a hit apiece for the Brewers.
In the opener, the Brewers scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull out the 12-11 come-from-behind win.
Magdzas, Hockenbrock and Slaviero pitched for the Brewers, allowing 17 hits with four strikeouts.
Stribley, Martinson and Bethards pitched for Northwestern, allowing eight hits with eight strikeouts and nine walks.
Aiden Weber led the Brewers at the plate with a double, single and three RBIs. Slaviero added a hit and two RBIs; Hockenbrock, Magdzas, Logan Rowe and Steven Nett added a hit and RBI each; and Austin McClure had an RBI.
For Northwestern, Steve Kastern doubled, singled and knocked in three runs; Bethards had two hits and two RBIs; Stribley and Klobucher had three hits apiece; Spangenberg and Schiff had two hits each; Martinson had a hit and two RBIs; and Eisenhauer and Rickey Schiff had RBI singles.
