Cal Ripken Senior League
The Cal Ripken Senior League wrapped up regular season play and began playoff action over the past two weeks.
The Brewers closed out the regular season going 3-0 to finish with a league-best 11-3 record. They clinched the regular season crown with a 5-4 win over the Cubs in the last game on their schedule.
Playoff games began this week. In a see-saw play-in game, the Cubs came from behind in the bottom of the final frame to outlast the Red Sox 10-9. With the loss, the Red Sox were eliminated from the playoffs.
The win earned the Cubs the right to advance to the second round and play the regular-season champion Brewers. The Brewers defeated the Cubs 5-1, and the Twins beat the Cardinals 5-4.
The Twins and Brewers will vie for the playoff championship at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Cardinals 12, Cubs 5
Michael Barnaby earned the win on the mound for the Cardinals and collected a pair of hits in one of two make-up games played July 19.
Riley Rehnstrand, Jacob Broux and Caelan Wick all had three hits apiece for the Cardinals. Wick finished with two doubles and a single; Broux had two singles and a double; and Rehnstrand had three singles. Jakob Holmlund added a triple and a single for the Cards; Tommy Erickson had a double and a single; and David Fender, Derek Fender and Jake Zatko added one single each.
Jackson Krull had two singles to lead the Cubs. Judd Erickson and TJ Sitek both doubled, and Luke Denninger and Ryan Crimmins singled.
Brewers 4, Twins 3
Timely hitting helped propel the Brewers (9-3) to victory against the Twins (10-2).
Dominic D’Auria scored two runs for the Brewers and drove in another with a single and a double. Ryan Hughes and Drew DeBruyne also picked up one RBI each, both hitting a double. Hughes also scored one run for the Brewers, and Joe Sanders tripled and scored the remaining run. Tyler Moen tripled for the winning team, and Cayden Laurvick singled.
On the mound, Kyle Nickila earned the win, and Hughes picked up the save.
Connor Fonger picked up two hits (a double and a single), an RBI and a run scored for the Twins. Josh Aune added an RBI on a fielder’s choice, and Alex Schlais and Justin Hase both walked and scored one run.
Four games were played in a busy day for the Cal Ripken Senior League. The Cubs picked up a pair of wins, defeating the Twins 3-1 and then besting the Red Sox 13-10 in seven innings. The Cardinals and the Brewers also picked up one win apiece.
Cardinals 11, Twins 10
The Twins and Cardinals played eight innings to determine the winner of a hard-fought game. The Cardinals came away with the victory when Barnaby scored the winning run.
David Fender had a strong showing on the mound, striking out nine batters on his way to the pitching win. He also had a single and a triple on offense.
Derek Fender was a home run away from hitting for the cycle, finishing with two singles, a double and a triple. Holmlund had a double and a triple; Barnaby had a double and a single; Austin Buck had a pair of singles; and Wick had a triple.
Brewers 8, Red Sox 3
The Brewers improved to 10-3 with a victory over the Red Sox.
Isaac Rios earned the pitching win and scored two runs for the Brewers on one hit and two walks. Hughes hit a single and a double for the Brewers to finish with two runs scored and two RBIs; and Brennan Morrissey, Jaxon D’Auria, Laurvick and Moen all scored one run apiece. DeBruyne had a single and an RBI for the Brewers, Morrissey singled and Nickila earned an RBI on a fielder’s choice.
Max Curtis, Logan Leif and Jayden Finckler all singled for the Red Sox, with Paul Cey, Curtis and Leif each scoring runs.
Cardinals 13, Red Sox 4
Two days after scoring the winning run for the Cardinals in their game against the Twins, Barnaby helped his team by pitching to a win on the mound.
At the plate, the Cardinals collected 14 hits. Rehnstrand accounted for more than a fifth of his team’s offense with three singles. David Fender and Holmlund both finished with a double and a single; Derek Fender and Wick singled twice apiece; Zatko, Buck and Hudson all singled; and Cody Jones got on base with a walk.
No statistics were provided for the Red Sox.
Brewers 5, Cubs 4
The Brewers completed their late-season surge with a narrow win over the Cubs.
Dominic D’Auria pitched for the win, and Nickila got the save. Sanders, Rios, Dominic D’Auria, DeBruyne and Laurvick each scored a run for the Brewers.
Laurvick had two hits and an RBI to lead the Brewers at the plate, and Dominic D’Auria also had two hits. Rios added a single and an RBI, Hughes singled and Dayton Podvin chipped in with an RBI.
Sitek belted a triple and a single for the Cubs and finished with one RBI and one run scored. Nolan Glonek also added a single for the Cubs.
The Brewers kept their winning streak going with a 5-1 victory over the Cubs in the Cal Ripken Senior League playoffs.
Dominic D’Auria was again the winning pitcher for the Brewers.
On offense, every Brewer contributed. Rios scored two runs and drove in another with a double and a single. Hughes finished with one run and one RBI on a triple and a single; and Dominic D’Auria and Sanders added one run each.
DeBruyne had two singles and an RBI; Jaxson and Dominic D’Auria both singled with an RBI; Morrissey doubled; and Podvin, Brandon McClure and Nick Ogren each singled.
Chad Rochon hit two singles for the Cubs and Glonek added one single. Lance Mosier scored the Cubs’ lone run, getting on base twice on walks. Jackson Hoffman also drew a walk to get on base for the Cubs.
