Earl was born Dec. 28, 1927 to Benjamin and Clara (Kipples) Davern, in Duluth. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Jan. 24, 1945 and was honorably discharged on Oct. 17, 1947, with the rank of Fireman 2nd Class, serving aboard the USS General H. W. Butner.
When he returned from active duty, he began his employment at a service station in West Duluth. If that wasn’t enough, he also owned and operated the oldest tax preparation service in Superior, Superior Tax and Accounting, now owned by his son. His favorite expression throughout his life was, “write if you find work.”
He was married on July 19, 1947 to Teresa Meyers at St. Francis Xavier Church and they recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary and together they raised four children.
In his free time, which wasn’t often, he served as trustee of St. Francis Xavier Church and was a former board member for the Superior Public Library. He was also very proud to be the Road Manager of his son’s band “The Emotionals.”
