University of Wisconsin-Superior track and field athlete Vicki Vinokur (Maple Grove, Minn.) recently was named a Division III All-Academic selection from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Vinokur has a cumulative grade point average of 3.38 through two academic years and is majoring in exercise science. She is one of 363 female student-athletes from around the country to receive the honor in 2013.
“As a coach you take a great deal of pride in the accomplishments of your student-athletes on the field, and oftentimes what they do in the classroom gets overlooked. I think people forget that they are more than athletes. They go to class just like every other student on campus,” said UWS coach Glen Drexler. “For me, I think I draw even more pride in this than anything Vicki did in her events during the season. School is the reason that they are here, and to see her excelling to the point of receiving this award is fantastic for her, our program and our athletic department.”
In her second year with the Yellowjackets, Vinokur established herself as one of the finest throwers in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and in the nation.
After narrowly missing the national meet during the indoor season, Vinokur enjoyed a breakout year on the outdoor circuit and qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the discus. There, she placed 14th with a throw of 40.73 meters.
She also set several school records in 2013, often breaking her own marks. Currently Vinokur holds the school outdoor record in the discus and the shot put.
“Vicki has worked extremely hard the past two years and I felt that this year she was only scratching the surface on the kind of thrower she can be,” Drexler said. “She is applying the same work ethic to her studies and is a tremendous student. When you see someone succeed like this you can’t help but be proud. Student-athletes like this represent everything that is good about college sports.”
Vinokur, a junior, is also a member of the Yellowjacket volleyball team.
