The Superior Reds suffered a pair of losses to Eau Claire during a soggy weekend at Morrie Arnovich Field.
Eau Claire faced Superior in the opening game of the American Legion regional tournament on Thursday and then played the Reds in a rematch Saturday in the championship game.
Eau Claire defeated Superior 8-7 in the opener and 12-0 on Saturday. The Reds finished tournament play with a 2-2 record.
The tournament began Thursday but was quickly interrupted by weather. Superior and Eau Claire had completed seven innings when their opening game was postponed by rain.
The Reds had been off to a sizzling start, led by Clayton Yeazle’s grand slam in the second inning. They led 7-1 after three innings and still held a 7-4 lead at the time of the delay.
When play resumed Friday, Eau Claire turned the tables and outscored Superior 4-0 in the final two innings for the 8-7 victory. Superior had no hits in the last three innings after collecting 10 in the first six.
Sam Hurt pitched the final inning for Eau Claire to earn the win. He allowed no hits and no walks while striking out two.
On offense, Ryan Conner’s double was the only extra-base hit for Eau Claire. Conner also added a double to finish the game going 2-for-4; Hunter Dicus and Hurt each added a pair of singles; and Dominic Berlin, Adam Faanes and Blake Johnson all added one single apiece.
Yeazle led Superior, going 2-for-4 and driving in five of the Reds’ seven runs. Spencer Severson added a double and a single; Tyler Long had a pair of singles; and Trent Olson, Taavi Mattson, Colton Yepma and Jordan Hughes had one hit each.
In Saturday’s championship game, Faanes powered Eau Claire’s offense with two doubles, a triple and six RBIs.
Garett Phillips earned the win on the mound with seven innings of work. He gave up two hits and struck out five.
NOTES: Ryan Myhre was the Reds’ starting pitcher Thursday, but he left the game in the fifth inning after getting hit by a line drive on his right wrist. X-rays were negative, but Myhre’s wrist was wrapped with a soft splint.
