The third annual Bill Downs, Jr. Memorial Golf Scramble was held on Friday, June 28 at the Nemadji Golf Course. This is the second year that Bill Downs III has organized the tournament and generously donated all proceeds to the Humane Society of Douglas County Inc. This year’s event brought in 16 teams (64 people) who all, from what I could tell, thoroughly enjoyed the tournament, delicious dinner at the Club House (kudos to Scott), the camaraderie, door prizes and supporting the homeless animals in Douglas County. This tournament was successful due to the generous spirit of giving of our team sponsors, hole sponsors, businesses and individuals who donated door prizes. They include Mark Carlson, Steve Flagstad and staff at Nemadji, Judy at Downs Lesage Funeral Home, Abby, Cody, HSDC volunteers Jean, Marie and Linda, and especially all of the golfers who turned out to support our cause. It was a very fitting way to once again honor the memory of Bill Downs Jr. who passed away in 2009 and was a life-long member of HSDC. I’d like to thank Don Leighton, too, for his fantastic “Have Fun or Get Out of the Way” column on June 21 in the Superior Telegram promoting this event. The final tally was $5,215 which will provide food, shelter and medical care for the animals housed at the county shelter. We can’t thank you enough, Bill … your dad’s spirit of giving lives on.
