Norma O’Leary and Deb Showalter are looking to continue a decade of dominance Wednesday at the Nemadji Women’s Invitational at Nemadji Golf Course in Superior.
For the past 11 years, Showalter and O’Leary have been the only two women to win the event. Between them, they have 15 Nemadji Women’s Invitational titles.
“They’re always going to be the favorites just because of being around there so much,” said Barb Hoag, tournament organizer.
On Wednesday, Showalter will defend her title from 2012. O’Leary, who won in 2010 and 2011, will be a top challenger, but Hoag said the championship flight will be “very interesting” for the two favorites this year.
“They’re going to get competition,” Hoag said.
Returning with Showalter and O’Leary to the championship flight are Amy Patenaude and Trish Glanville, who finished tied for fourth in 2012. Cassie Berg, a 2010 graduate of Superior High School, and Nemadji golfer Pat Kelly will also be back in the championship flight.
Among the new golfers to watch will be Jeanne Hawkinson, Jen Walter and Maggie Lattery, who graduated from Northwestern High School in 2008 and went on to golf for UW-Eau Claire.
Avery Steen, who won the Heart O’ North Conference individual title in 2011 while playing for Luck-Unity, may also be golfing in the top flight.
The invitational begins at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday with a shotgun start. The championship flight golfs from the gold tees on the east-west course, and all other golfers use the red tees on the north-south course.
In all, 75 golfers are signed up to participate in the 2013 Nemadji Women’s Invitational. The open division has 43 entrants, and the Renna Rychlak Memorial Senior Invitational has 32. Barb Olson, who has won the past two senior division titles, is among the favorites in the senior division.
A food drive for the Salvation Army will be held in conjunction with the invitational, and a portion of the proceeds from the event also goes to the SHS girls golf program. Last year the event raised $300 for the Spartan golfers.
