Former Superior resident, Robert L. "Bud" Matthews passed away July 12, 2013, in New Port Richey, Fla.
Born June 21, 1928 in La Crosse, Wis. to Loren John and Helen Matthews, he grew up in Superior and was a graduate of Wisconsin State College and the American Institute of Investment Banking in Milwaukee, Wis.
Mr. Matthews owned and operated Matthews Distributing Company for nearly 20 years before moving his family to Florida where his success continued in a number of hospitality industry businesses. In 1984 Bud joined the Nielsen Company and for the next 25 years until his retirement in 2009 at the age of 80, trained hundreds of employees in marketing and data information gathering methodology.
Mr. Matthews was a retired Air Force Major having served 39 years in the Minnesota Air National Guard with the 148th Fighter Interceptor Group in Duluth and continuing service at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla.
He will best be remembered for his movie-star good looks, orator envied voice, endless charm and cunning wit. He leaves to all who knew him a legacy of limitless warmth and abundant grace.
Mr. Matthews is survived by Beverly, his wife of 19 years; daughters Lisa Pape (Brian) and Kathy Matthews; sons Mark Matthews and Loren John Matthews (Gloria); former wife Janice DeMars Sharkey; step-daughter Nicole Brown (Cory) and 10 grandchildren.
