A Dollar General store is coming to Superior. It is under construction at the site between the Erlanson’s building and the railroad tracks along Belknap Street near Super One Foods in the Belknap Plaza.
General contractor Greg Welk, owner of Landmark Construction out of Wild Rose, Wis., is coordinating the project. He said the store will be about 9,100 square feet.
Plans Welk submitted to the Superior Building Inspection office last week indicated the building will be 18 feet tall, about 72 feet wide and roughly 130 feet long. A number of local subcontractors were tapped for the project, including Badger Excavating and Lake Country Masonry.
Dollar General, based in Goodlettsville, Tenn., has 10,000 stores in 40 states, according to the company website, www.dollargeneral.com. The nearest Dollar General stores include one on Boundary Avenue in Solon Springs and one in Minong.
Meeting the needs of customers is Dollar General’s top priority in deciding where to open a store, said company spokeswoman Kelsey Layer.
“Superior seemed like a great fit for Dollar General,” she said. The new store, expected to open in late fall, will be hiring up to 10 employees. The best way to apply is through the Dollar General website under the careers tab.
Welk, who has built a number of Dollar General stores, said he expected store construction to be completed sometime in October, with the doors opening soon after that. He said in these projects the developer purchases the land and constructs the building, then leases the site to Dollar General.
