Mildred J. "Millie" (Helland) Swanberg, died peacefully July 11, 2013, at her daughter's home in Albuquerque, N.M.
Millie was born on May 18, 1921, in North Dakota. Her parents later moved to Superior where she attended schools and graduated from Superior Central High School.
She was a former active member of the Ladies Aid Association of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Solon Springs. She was also a member of the Lochman-Jensen American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Gordon for over 50 years. Millie was involved with many volunteer groups over the years, but her main love was enjoying her grandchildren and playing Bingo.
During World War II, while her husband was serving overseas, Millie worked in the Superior Shipyards.
She married Loren Swanberg on April 18, 1943. For most of their married life, they resided in the Solon Springs or the Superior area.
She is survived by one son Ronald (Shirley) Swanberg, Beaver Dam, Wis./Fort Myers, Fla., and one daughter, Julie (Wellington) Haight of Albuquerque, N.M. Also survived by a granddaughter, Kimberly (David) Schultz, and two grandsons, Garrett and Neil Haight.
Millie was preceded in death by her husband, Loren in 1999; her parents Milo and Aletta Helland; a sister Adeline (Burt) Mulcahy; two brothers, Lawrence (Myrtle) Helland and M. J. "Bud" (Lavoun) Helland; and two grandsons, Kevin Swanberg and Adam Haight.
In 2002 Millie moved to Albuquerque, N.M., to reside near her daughter and family. Later, in declining health, her daughter and family became health care providers in their home for Millie until her death.
A private family graveside memorial service will be held at a later date at the Evergreen Cemetery in Solon Springs. Memorials can be made in her honor to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
The Cremation Society of New Mexico in Albuquerque is serving the family.
