Reds fall to CubsReds and Blues will play in this weekend’s Duluth Lakeview Classic
The Superior Reds American Legion baseball lost to the West Duluth Cubs 5-1 Tuesday night at Morrie Arnovich Field.
Dane Sislo suffered the complete-game loss, allowing 10 hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks. Only one of the Cubs’ runs was earned.
Superior’s run came on Erik Anderson’s RBI single in the fourth inning.
The Reds also got hits from Trent Olson, Nik Mattson, Taavi Mattson and Andy Glonek.
The Cubs scored once in the first inning, three times in the third and one more time in the seventh. Superior then left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.
The Reds will help host the Duluth Lakeview Classic this weekend at Morrie Arnovich Field.
Superior will compete in the Blue Division, along with Lino Lakes, Wayzata and Tri-City Maroon. The Reds play twice Friday — against Lino Lakes at 10 a.m. and Tri-City Maroon at 8 p.m. They wrap up round-robin play against Wayzata at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Division winners and the next top three teams will advance to the championship round, which begins Saturday afternoon. The tournament concludes with the championship game at 2 p.m. Sunday at Ordean Field at Duluth East High School.
The Superior Blues 16-year-old team will also play in the Classic this weekend, taking the place of Fridley, which pulled out of the tournament.
The Blues play Thunder Bay at noon Friday at Wade Stadium, West Duluth at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Hermantown and Cambridge at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Ordean (Duluth East High School).
NOTES: The Reds went 2-3 in last year’s Classic and were the only local team to advance to bracket play. … Bloomington defeated Wayzata 4-3 in last year’s championship game. The Reds lost to the Minnesota Blizzard 10-4 in the 2011 title game. … Lakeville North is currently ranked No. 4 and Wayzata is No. 12 in the recent American Legion Minnesota Coaches Poll.
