Matt Simonson took top honors at Saturday’s 13th annual Lincoln Park Walleye Open on the St. Louis River in Duluth.
Simonson, of Duluth, turned in a walleye weighing 7.91 pounds. Phil Rust of Duluth was second with a 5.93-pound walleye, followed by James Roy of Solon Springs with a 5.88-pound fish.
Ernie Flood of Superior (5.70-pound walleye), Charlie Strudwick of Esko (5.32), Charlie Borich of Superior (5.20), Jerry Olson of Superior (5.15), Jerry Stein of Cloquet (5.09), Joe Biermaier of Brainerd (4.85) and Scott Richardson of Minong (4.84) rounded out the top 10.
Pat Walsh of Saginaw was far back in the pack with a 2.6-pound walleye — but it was good for 40th place, which earned him the event’s top prize of $1,000. Several other places between 10th and 35th won prizes worth $300 to $750.
Despite the cool, foggy conditions on Saturday, this year’s competition still drew 335 entries, with 114 walleyes weighed.
