Organizations receive donations from energy customers
Nearly $37,000 goes to work in local communities by the organizations that received grants from the East Central Energy Operation Round Up® Trust.
Grants for 21 projects were awarded when the trust board, comprised of ECE members, met to review applications. Funds will be used to assist volunteer fire departments, emergency shelters, community youth programs and more.
Cambridge/Isanti area organizations received $10,255 to help firefighters purchase a tool used to extricate crash victims from vehicles and to help a domestic violence shelter replace a leaky water heater and remove rust from the shelter’s water. The historical society will be able to replace equipment that was destroyed in a 2011 fire.
Superior area organizations received $8,683 to improve the water supply for a rural volunteer fire department and to support the work of Just Kids Dental, which brings preventative dental services and education to uninsured children in Douglas County schools.
Pine City area organizations received $5,900. Grants included help for the local fire department to acquire a rescue craft for responding to emergencies on water, ice, snow and rough terrain and assistance for a homeless shelter with air conditioning needs. The Girl Scouts will use their grant to purchase supplies for their fall encampment.
Grants totaling $7,000 will support community projects in Princeton, Foley, Duelm, and Rush City and two projects that benefit the environment. One is focused on teaching Chisago County students about water quality and the other on preserving the scenic value and water quality of the Rum River. Emergency assistance funds totaling $5,000 went to Lakes and Pines Community Action Council’s Reach Out for Warmth program.
Established in 1997, the trust is made possible by ECE members who choose to have their monthly electric bill rounded up to the next dollar. The average contribution is around $6 per year, and the maximum annual contribution is $11.88.
Individuals who would like to participate can sign up by checking the box at the bottom of their electric bill or calling 800-254-7944.
