Homelessness is a serious problem and it can put a serious strain on a community economically.
According to Jordan Weinand for the Northlandsnewscenter.com there are about 932 people homeless in the Duluth area.
One of the reasons why homelessness can hurt the surrounding community economically is that one three-night stay at a hospital can cost around $18,500. That is an amount that a homeless person cannot cover, and therefore the hospital has to find a way to cover the expense.
There are two ways a hospital can cover the cost. One solution is to write off the amount in a tax deduction. “Hospitals are also able to write off these services” says J. Douglas Yarbrough in the article “Our Healthcare System Is Failing.” Another way mentioned by Yarbrough is “who can pay for his or her own medical expenses covers the cost of homeless people who use the services that a hospital provides”.
This means either tax dollars are used to cover the cost of medical expenses when a hospital chooses to write off medical expenses cannot cover. Otherwise, the hospital will hike up the amount of money other patients need to pay for medical treatment.
Besides all of the uncovered costs of medical treatment for homeless people, there is one organization that specifically aims at helping the homeless receive the medical treatment they need. This organization is called the l Health Care for the Homeless, says the National Coalition for the homeless. This organization is federally funded, and covers expenses such as medical, dental and mental health treatment, and supportive housing, according to the coalition.
In order to help out homeless people with the issue of medical attention, people need to become aware of the Health Care for the Homeless program, and support it by making sure it receives the required funding it needs to function, and grow to meet the needs of homeless people across the nation.
This would then help to relieve the cost of medical expenses, since hospitals will then not have to write off unpaid treatment costs, or raising prices on the insured.
It’s our responsibility to help those in need, and supporting Health Care for the Homeless program is a good way to start.
