SHS soccer team wins conference titleSpartan girls win Border Conference with perfect 7-0 record
The 2013 season has turned out to be a banner year for Superior High School girls soccer team after all.
Players worried about how the season would turn out when persistent snow wiped out the first half of their games, but Thursday night the team was celebrating after a 1-0 victory over Osceola.
“That win got us the conference title — first time ever,” said Len Albrecht, head coach of the Spartan girls soccer team.
Superior holds a 7-0 record in the Middle Border Conference this season and a 7-2 record overall.
The Spartan defense has given up just four goals in its seven conference games, despite switching to a new defense at the start of this season.
On Thursday, senior forward Amber Holt scored the winning goal for Superior. She made the shot on a free kick at 21:10 of the first half. It was the fifth goal of the season for Holt.
Sara Balcer had eight saves in goal for Superior.

On Tuesday the SHS girls won 2-1 at Spooner.

The Spartans began the week with a rain-shortened 3-0 win over Amery Monday at the SHS soccer fields.
“They called the game at the half because the field turned into a lake,” Albrecht said. “The whole first half was played in a torrential downpour.”
Game results are official if at least one half has been played.
Superior’s Rachel Dixon and Holt each had one goal and one assist apiece, and Tina Lurndal scored Superior’s third goal.
Dixon scored in the 13th minute with an assist from Holt. Holt then gave Superior a 2-0 lead in the 30th minute with an unassisted goal, and Lurndal made the final score 3-0 in the 36th minute, assisted by Dixon.
