A Superior man will spend 60 days in jail for slapping, hitting and grabbing the throat of a 6-year-old child.
Melvin Corey Dunigan, 40, pleaded no contest last week in Douglas County Circuit Court to one count physical abuse of a child-intentionally cause harm. He was sentenced to two years of probation and 60 days in jail with Huber release for work and counseling. Dunigan was also ordered to take a parent skills class, continue working with an anger-management group, submit a DNA sample and have no violent or abusive contact with the victim.
The charge stems from an October incident in which Dunigan admitted spanking the child with a belt for playing with a lighter. He told Superior Police Detective Joe Krieg a short time later he found another lighter in the child’s backpack and called the child over. When the child did not respond, Dunigan told Krieg, he slapped the child on the cheek. When the child punched and kicked at him, he grabbed the child by the chin and slapped him three times. He told Krieg he did not realize he had hit the child so hard that it bruised the 6-year-old’s face.
Dunigan’s attorney, Public Defender Fredric Anderson, told the court that it was a case of discipline gone too far, and a child out of control, according to court records.
