John William Bolen, 71, lost his courageous battle with cancer on April 28, 2013. He was at home in the town of Lakeside with loving family members at his bedside.
He was born in Two Harbors, Minn. on Nov. 18, 1941 the youngest of six children born to Perry and Geneva Bolen.
John grew up in Knife River where he learned his lifetime love of fishing and hunting. In his later years he learned to golf, spending many enjoyable hours with family and friends.
He worked various jobs including construction and sailing on the great lakes before being hired by Barko Hydraulics in 1974. He retired from there in 2001 after nearly 28 years of service.
John was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law, Charlotte Haworth; brother, Keith; sister Lois Lovold; grandson, Niall Bolen Nesgoda; great-granddaughter, Gracie Rose Ultican.
John is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Carol; sons, Curtis (Debbie) Perry, Don (Mary) Perry; John (Gail Rowe) Bolen, Jr.; daughters, Theresa Schnorr, Gale (Don) Archambeau, Ruthann (Wade Plaisted) Ultican, Sharon (Errol) Olson; sisters, Mary Johnson, Joanne (Bony) Fuentes, Genevieve (Norman) Palmquist; 19 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Also many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be at noon until the 1 p.m. memorial service Saturday, May 18 at First Evangelical Covenant Church, 3311 Hammond Ave., Superior. The family was assisted with arrangements by the Cremation Society of Minnesota.
