The WIAA Division 1 regional game was originally scheduled to be played in Superior, but was moved to Eau Claire because of rain.
The Huskies took advantage of the home-field advantage as they used three home runs to end Superior’s season with a record of 14-5.
The Spartans were one pitch away from winning the game when Abby Long hit two-out, two-strike home run to tie the game 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning.
After Superior failed to score in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Huskies scored the eventual game-winning run when freshman Brooke Thompson hit a pinch-hit home run with two outs in the top of the eighth inning.
Thompson’s game-winner came in her first-ever varsity at-bat.
Superior took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Taylor Johnson doubled, and after Emily Hansen singled, scored when Jessica Lindstrom’s pop up in front of the pitcher was mishandled. After Lindstrom stole second, two runs came in when Gabby Gidley reached on an error.
