Jarvi's grand slam gives Denfeld 6-2 win over SuperiorSpartans play against Thursday at Hermantown
Melissa Jarvi’s grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Duluth Denfeld Hunters to a 6-2 victory over the Superior High School softball team Tuesday evening at the Wade Stadium softball fields.
Denfeld scored single runs in the first and second innings while Superior scored in the second and third innings.
Superior had several chances to break the 2-2 tie.
Gabby Gidley reached second base twice with no outs, but both times she was stranded at third base. The Spartans also failed to score with Kari Miller in scoring position with no outs in the seventh inning.
Gidley finished with two doubles, Alison Wainionpaa hit a home run, Emily Hansen had an RBI single and Miller singled.
Wainionpaa suffered the loss, allowing four hits with five strikeouts and seven walks.
Sarah Hendrickson was the winning pitcher, allowing five hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks. Jarvi also doubled and had five RBIs.
The Spartans (14-3) play at Hermantown at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Split at Grand Rapids
Superior split a doubleheader at Grand Rapids Monday, losing the opener 5-4 and winning game two 3-1.
With the score tied 4-4 in the opening game, Grand Rapids scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh when Piper Klatt singled, stole second, moved to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a passed ball.
Lexi Koerbitz was the winning pitcher, allowing seven hits with six strikeouts and one walk in six innings.
Kaitlin Heinen pitched into the seventh inning, allowing five hits with seven strikeouts. Wainionpaa got one out in the seventh inning.
Piper Klatt had two hits and scored two runs and Hannah Schmoll tripled.
For Superior, Tailor Schuster doubled, singled and scored two runs; Jessica Lindstrom doubled and singled; and Emily Hansen, Miller and Britta Bergstrom singled.
The Thunderhawks also scored twice in the first and second innings. Superior scored once in the second inning and three times in the fourth.
In Superior’s win, Wainionpaa was the winning pitcher, tossing a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts and four walks. Megan Pehrson was the losing pitcher, allowing five hits with nine strikeouts and four walks.
At the plate, Wainionpaa doubled and had two RBIs; Gidley had an RBI single; Lindstrom singled and scored a run; Miller doubled; and Hansen singled.
After Grand Rapids scored its run in the top of the sixth inning, Superior answered with all three of its runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Schmoll doubled twice for Grand Rapids.
