The Superior High School softball team completed its second doubleheader sweep within a span of 20 hours Saturday with a pair of wins at Ashland.
The Spartans (13-1) began the weekend with two wins Friday night at the Hibbing Tournament. After playing at 4 and 6 p.m. on the Iron Range, Superior was in action again at 10 a.m. Saturday in Ashland, where it defeated the Oredockers 11-2 and 13-0 in five innings.
Shannon Johnstad was the winning pitcher in the opener, allowing three hits with one strikeout and 10 walks.
On offense for Superior, Gabby Gidley was 3-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored; Taylor Johnson was 3-for-5 with two doubles; Jessica Lindstrom singled twice, had two RBIs and scored three runs; and Harmony Clarke was 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Olyvia Bretting had an RBI single for Ashland.
Kaitlin Heinen picked up the win in game two, tossing a one-hitter with five strikeouts.
Lindstrom was 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored; Gidley was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.
Fryer doubled for Ashland.
On Friday night in Hibbing, Superior defeated Eveleth 12-9 and the host Blue Jackets 17-1 in five innings.
Johnstad picked up the complete-game win in the opener, allowing eight hits with four strikeouts and eight walks.
Offensively, Lindstrom homered, tripled, doubled twice, knocked in three runs and score three others. Gidley added three hits, an RBI and two runs scored; and Tailor Schuster had two hits, an RBI and two runs scored.
For Eveleth, Hannah Kreibich was 3-for- with two RBIs and Alex Schlotec was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Heinen was the winning pitcher against Hibbing, allowing three hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Fallyn Morehouse suffered the loss, allowing 20 hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Lindstrom led the way once again with a home run, triple and seven RBIs. Johnson was also 4-for-5 with two doubles and five runs scored; Heinen doubled, singled twice and knocked in a run; and Emily Hansen doubled, singled twice and knocked in two runs.
For Hibbing, Rebecca Rebrovich had two hits and Keke Sirjord had a hit and RBI.
Superior’s junior varsity also went 2-0, defeating Eveleth 8-3 and Hibbing 22-8.
The Spartans play another doubleheader at 4 p.m. Monday at Grand Rapids.
