The Superior High School wrestling team recently held its annual awards banquet.
The Spartans celebrated an 11-8 record this season and honored varsity letterwinners for their dedication, commitment and outstanding performance this season. This year’s letterwinners are Nick Long, Brandon Olson, Nathan VanErt, Levi Day, Brock Olson, Tyler Lehikoinen, Ross Kennelly, Tony Mohr, Anthony Ells, Adam Edwards, Alaine Pierre, Sam Freeman, Joey McDonald and Dalton DeRosia.
Coaches also recognized academic achievements and handed out a number of awards.
Long was named the Rob Urbaniak Memorial Rookie of the Year Award recipient. The 106-pounder won 31 varsity matches and became the first SHS freshman to qualify for sectionals and win a Heart O’ North Conference championship.
Kennelly was awarded the Outstanding Wrestler award. He was selected by his coaches and teammates as the Spartans’ first freshman team captain, then went on to win 25 varsity matches.
Freshman Brandon Olson was awarded the Most Inspirational Wrestler award; Lehikoinen, a sophomore, earned the Most Improved Wrestler; Mohr, a sophomore, was awarded the “Iron Man” award; and McDonald, a junior co-captain, was named the Most Dedicated Wrestler.
The Superior Middle School Wrestling Team was given recognition for having outstanding success this season. Middle School wrestlers recognized were Jack Androsky, Jeremy Flaherty, Oscar Flaherty, Jackson Karren, Brahden Long, Nickolas Lodahl, Branden McClure, Dustin Neldon, Caden Stone and Logan Stone.
