A Shell Lake man accused of striking a toddler with a plastic golf club so hard it left a bruise and welt on the child’s leg made an initial appearance in Douglas County Circuit Court last week.
Kyle Anthony Fornengo, 19, faces felony charges of physical abuse of a child-intentionally cause bodily harm and bail jumping stemming from the May 1 incident. He was released on $400 cash bail. His next court date is set for Wednesday.
According to the criminal complaint:
Fornengo was visiting the boy’s home in the town of Amnicon. The child and his brother were hitting each other with the golf clubs and Fornengo told them to stop, but they did not. The child hit Fornengo in the nose with the golf club.
The Shell Lake man took the golf club from the boy and went to spank him on the bottom but missed and hit him on the leg.
The smack was so hard that more than three hours later a swollen red mark in the shape of the head of a golf club was still visible on the boy’s leg.
Fornengo has also been accused of second-degree sexual assault of a child in an unrelated Washburn County case, according to online court records. Conditions of his bond in the Washburn County case requires that he doesn’t commit any new crime and set a curfew requiring him to be in his Shell Lake home from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each day.
