The Superior High School baseball team fell to 2-2 on the season with a 2-0 loss to the Hermantown Hawks Monday evening at Morrie Arnovich Field.
Hermantown’s runs came in the first inning when Ryan Johnson led off with a single and later scored on Kevin Folman’s single. Folman then scored on a throwing error.
Grant Rindal suffered the loss for the Spartans, allowing five hits with seven strikeouts.
Folman was the winning pitcher and Kevin Stocke picked up the save. The two allowed four hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.
Rindal, Jordan Hughes, Dane Sislo and Nik Mattson had Superior’s hits.
Hermantown got two hits from Folman and one each from Johnson, Lane LeGarde and Scott Wasbotten.
Superior stranded 12 runners on base, including bases loaded in the sixth inning. The Spartans also left two runners on base in the first, second, third and fifth innings.
Superior hosts Proctor at 4:30 p.m. today (Tuesday) and Ashland for a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Friday.
The Spartans also announced they will play Duluth Denfeld at 6:30 p.m. on May 21. This game replaces Superior’s game with Northwestern.
SPARTAN SPIN: Hermantown (6-2) committed six errors and Superior had two. … The SHS JV improved to 3-2 with a sweep of Hermantown 9-2 and 8-7. Erick Anderson pitched a complete game for the win in the opener, allowing one hit with seven strikeouts and six walks. The Spartans had five hits. Nate Kunkel had two hits, Sean O’Neill doubled and Austin Slaviero had three RBIs. Kunkel started game two and along with Morgen Moen and Will Mullens struck out five batters. Superior had eight hits with Hunter Hockenbrock and Joshua Tomczak leading the way with two apiece. Alex Kaske, Evan Hughes and Tate Schlichting added a hit each. ... … Later Monday, Hermantown’s LeGarde and Johnson tossed a seven-inning no-hitter, but the Hawks lost to Ashland 2-0. … Earlier on Monday, Ashland (4-1) defeated Two Harbors 10-0 in five innings. Ashland’s Zack Huybrecht was the winning pitcher, allowing just one hit. Ashland scored both runs in the third inning on two walks, a hit batsman, an error and a wild pitch.
