Why should we pay for something we do not want? This is the question people need to ask on Tax Day. My wife and I refuse to pay federal taxes since 47 percent of each tax dollar goes to the military. We refuse to support war, weapons, pollution, destruction and all those who foster these.
The U.S. military is receiving $1.7 trillion this year, according to the War Resisters League In the past, it cannot account for $2.3 trillion it received. (Donald Rumsfeld) We know that more than $100 billion was somehow lost by the U.S. military in Iraq, and now much more is being lost in Afghanistan. Taxpayers have already put out close to $7 trillion for the two illegal and immoral invasions. The U.S. military is the biggest consumer of oil as well as the biggest polluter in the world. It has 1,000 bases in the world, about 50 of those in Germany. If we are honest, we must admit that the military is destroying our economy and our means to provide adequate health care, education and help for the old and disabled. Many of the disabled now are those young who were sent to invade and occupy Iraq and Afghanistan for corporate economic reasons. Many soldiers have assaulted women. With the unmanned drones the U.S. military continues to kill innocent civilians in both countries. Estimates are that over 2,000 innocent civilians already have been killed with the drones. (McClatchy) Taxpayers fund the Guantanamo Bay prison where 160 prisoners are being held indefinitely. A hundred of them are now on a hunger strike. It is time we allowed citizens to determine where they want their tax money to go.
Have them fill out a form on which taxpayers indicate where they want their tax money spent, and make the government responsible for abiding by your wishes. That would be the democratic way.
I am willing to bet that very few would want their money to go to the U.S. military. They would rather support social programs. Until that day, we will continue to refuse to pay federal income tax.
