A man and woman arrested in connection with an April 21 attack that left a man with severe head injuries made their initial appearances in Douglas County Circuit Court on Wednesday.
Chad Loran Siegel, 40, of Superior and Melissa Coal Martinson, 29, of Sturgeon Lake, Minn. each face one felony count of aiding a felon. Cash bail of $10,000 was set for each of them, with the condition that they have no contact with each other. Siegel was also ordered to have no contact with Martinson.
According to the criminal complaint: Martinson and the victim got in Siegel’s vehicle at a Superior convenience store. Two other men were already in the vehicle. As they drove to Duluth, the males began arguing about money and other things. One of the other men in the vehicle and the victim began fighting in the back seat and they stopped the vehicle at Skyline in Duluth. The victim was dragged out of the truck and beaten by all three men.
Siegel said they originally left the victim on the street, but decided to go back and get the unconscious man. They drove the victim to a West Duluth residence where they cleaned him up, then bagged up his bloody clothes. Then they dropped off the victim at a Superior residence. The people who lived there brought the victim to Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Hospital at about 11 p.m. that night. Siegel and Martinson then drove to a different Superior residence where Martinson dropped off the bloody clothes.
The victim was in critical condition on April 26, according to information from Deputy Chief Nick Alexander with the Superior Police Department.
If convicted, Siegel and Martinson each face a maximum penalty of three years and six months in jail and up to a $10,000 fine. A preliminary hearing is set for Wednesday.
