SHS baseball team wins home openerNOTE: Saturday's doubleheader with Chippewa Falls has been postponed
The Superior High school baseball team defeated the Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers 10-1 in its home opener Thursday at the SHS baseball field.
Leading just 3-1, the Spartans exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Offensively for Superior, Nik Mattson and Jordan Hughes both doubled, singled and knocked in three runs; Spencer Severson hit a two-run home run; and Grant Rindal singled twice.
The Spartans also got a hit apiece from Taavi Mattson, Andy Glonek, Dane Sislo, Austin Arnovich and Jake Libal. Glonek, Sislo and Libal also stole a base each.
Colton Yepma struck out seven, allowed four hits and walked three in five innings. Mattson pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
Jordan Fralich had two hits and Alex Johnson suffered the loss for the Hilltoppers.
Severson, who reached base three times, got the Spartans off to a good start with his home run in the first inning.
Marshall scored its lone run in the second inning, but Superior matched that run in the bottom of the second when Mattson walked with the bases loaded.
Two-run doubles by Mattson and Hughes highlighted Superior’s sixth inning.
The Spartans’ doubleheader Saturday with Chippewa Falls will now be played at Chippewa Falls at 11 a.m. The varsity will play at Casper Park and the junior varsity will play at Hallie Park.
Superior, which hosted Hermantown on Monday, hosts Proctor at 4:30 p.m. today and Ashland for a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Friday.
