Solon Springs baseball and softball teams in openers
The Solon Springs High School baseball team opened its season with a pair of wins over Butternut Monday evening in Solon Springs.
The Eagles won the opening game 14-4 in five innings then completed the sweep with a 13-1 win in game two.
“It was great to finally get outside,” SSHS coach Nate Ahlberg said. “I was pleasantly surprised with our fielding, considering it was our first time on the field this season.
“I also thought our patience at the plate was great. We drew 31 walks across the doubleheader, with Tyler Long drawing eight walks himself.”
Long was the Eagles’ winning pitcher in the opener, allowing one hit with eight strikeouts. Offensively he helped his own cause with an RBI and three stolen bases.
Also for Solon Springs, Brett Missinne was 3-for-3 with two triples and six RBIs; Joe Androsky had a hit, knocked in three runs and scored three times; and Ryan Johnson had a hit, two RBIs and scored two runs.
Missinne was the winning pitcher in games two, tossing a two-hitter with four strikeouts in four innings. He also had a hit offensively with two runs scored and an RBI.
Johnson also struck out five over the final three innings.
Long hit an inside-the-park home run and scored four times. Androsky added a hit with two RBIs and Riley Gibson was 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
Solon Springs hosts Bayfield for a doubleheader at 5 p.m. Thursday and plays at Shell Lake Friday.

SSHS softball team wins
The Solon Springs softball team played its first official game of the season Monday in Bruce.
The Eagles claimed an 8-5 victory to start their season off with a 1-0 record.
Valerie Garay earned the pitching win for Solon Springs. She struck out six in six innings of work. Alicia Jensen came in to pitch the seventh inning and struck out the final two batters to preserve the win.
At the plate, Jessica Holderness was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and an in-the-park home run for the Eagles. Tylor Kruse had a triple, and Garay went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Solon Springs is back in action today at Birchwood. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
