University of Wisconsin-Superior sophomore thrower Vicki Vinokur (Maple Grove, Minn.), who brought home a first-place finish and a new school record last week, has been named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week for the week of April 29.
On Wednesday at the Hamline Twilight in St. Paul, Vinokur placed third in the discus with a mark of 44.83 meters (147 feet, 1 inch). At the same meet she placed fifth in the shot put with a mark of 12.53 meters (41-1.5), but had her best throw of the day disallowed because of a foul.
At Saturday’s Saint Mary’s Open in Winona, Minn., Vinokur broke her own school record in the shot put with a mark of 13.03 meters (42-9), which was also good enough for first-place honors. She placed fifth in the discus at Saint Mary’s with a mark of 39.75 meters (130-5). Vinokur rounded out the day with a ninth-place finish in the hammer throw.
Vinokur is currently ranked fifth in the WIAC in the shot put and eighth in the hammer throw. The mark she hit in the discus at Hamline puts her atop the WIAC Honor Roll.
“Vicki had a great week last week with some really strong throws in all three events,” UWS coach Glen Drexler said. “She has put in all the work this year and things are starting to line up for her. She had a great week and deserves this award, but she also knows that this is just the beginning. She still has some work to be done.”
Nationally, Vinokur is ranked 28th in the shot put, sixth in the discus and 37th in the hammer throw, putting her in strong position to qualify for the national meet in at least one event.
“I said at the end of last spring that I liked the chances of having two of my throwers qualify for nationals this year because I felt both Katie (Capriglione) and Vicki have what it takes to get there,” Drexler said. “If the two of them keep on the pace that they are on, I think that can come to fruition and there’s a chance they both could compete in multiple events, which would really be special.”
The Yellowjacket track and field teams will be competing at the 2013 WIAC Outdoor Championships Friday and Saturday in La Crosse.
