SHS softball team off to 4-0 startThe Spartans have nine games scheduled next week beginning at 4 p.m. Monday at Grantsburg. Afar playing Tuesday at Proctor, Superior will host Duluth East for a doubleheader on Thursday and Eau Claire Memorial for a doubleheader on Friday before wrapping up the week with three games in the Becker Tournament on Saturday.
The Superior High School softball team improved to 4-0 with its second doubleheader sweep in two days.
One day after taking a pair of games from Eau Claire Memorial, the Spartans made it four in a row with wins of 3-0 and 4-1 Friday at Rice Lake.
Alison Wainionpaa picked up both wins over the Warriors for the Spartans. She allowed six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in her shutout victory, then tossed a three-hitter with five strikeouts and four walks in game two.
Offensively in game one for Superior, Gabby Gidley had two hits and knocked in two runs, and Taylor Johnson had two hits. Lizz Sutton doubled for the Warriors.
In game two, Jessica Lindstrom had two hits, and Kari Miller and Johnson each had two RBIs.
Allison Solum suffered the loss for Rice Lake in game two, allowing six hits with three walks in three innings.
The Spartans have seven games scheduled this week, including Monday at Grantsburg.
Superior will now play Proctor at 4:30 p.m. today at the Superior Middle School, then host Duluth East for a doubleheader Thursday before wrapping up the week with three games at the Becker Tournament Saturday.
SHS sweeps ECM
The Spartans opened their season by sweeping the Eau Claire Memorial Old Abes 14-13 and 14-2 in six innings Thursday afternoon at the Irish Dome in Rosemount, Minn.
Trailing 13-8 in the bottom of the seventh inning of the opener, the Spartans strung together a single and five doubles with two outs, including Johnson’s walk-off RBI double, to complete the come-from-behind victory.
Katie Hienen picked up the pitching win in relief of starter Shannon Johnstad. The two allowed nine hits with 17 walks and five strikeouts.
Offensively for the Spartans, Emily Hansen was 4-for-5 with a double and two runs; Lindstrom was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs; Gidley was 3-for-4 with a triple, double and three RBIs; and Heinen doubled, singled, knocked in three runs and scored twice.
Miranda Thesing-Ritter doubled, singled and had two RBIs for the Old Abes.
Heinen picked up the complete-game win in game two, allowing six hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Dani Mestelle took the loss for the Old Abes, allowing eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 4 1/3 innings.
Lindstrom led the Spartans at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two home runs, four RBIs and three runs scored. Gidley was 3-for-4 with two RBIs; Johnson doubled, singled and knocked in a run; and Hansen had a pair of hits.
Mestelle tripled, doubled and scored three runs, and Brianne Winkleman had two hits and scored two runs for ECM.
“Picking up a pair of wins against a regional opponent is a great way to kick off the season,” SHS coach Amy Zembo said. “The girls hit the ball extremely well, pounding out 31 hits in the doubleheader, and they showed that never-give-up attitude with the way they rallied in the first game.”
SPARTAN SPIN: The SHS JV won its first game 9-5 and lost game two 10-9. Sydney Johnson was the winning pitcher with seven strikeouts and two walks in the Spartans’ win.
