Superior's Holmes wins WIAA Scholar Athlete AwardHolmes was chosen from among 750 seniors nominated by more than 375 high schools in the state. She is the first athlete from SHS, boy or girl, chosen to receive the award.
Spartan cross country and track star Leah Holmes accomplished another first for Superior High School this week when she was named a finalist for the 2013 WIAA Scholar Athlete Award.
The award is given to the top 32 scholar athletes in Wisconsin, with four boys and four girls chosen from each division.
Holmes was chosen from among 750 seniors nominated by more than 375 high schools in the state. She is the first athlete from SHS, boy or girl, chosen to receive the award.
Holmes accomplished another first earlier this year when she qualified for her fourth consecutive WIAA Cross Country State Tournament. No other Spartan girl has competed at state more than once, and no boy has advanced to state more than three times.
“That’s a record that will never be broken,” SHS coach Dan Conway said in October. “It might be tied but it will never be broken.”
Holmes has earned eight varsity letters at SHS and is working on her ninth. She has four letters in cross country, one in basketball and three in track. Holmes holds a 3.73 GPA and is active in National Honor Society, PledgeMakers and Scott Anderson Leadership.
After graduation, Holmes plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She will run cross country and track for the Division I Panthers.
The 2013 WIAA Scholar Athlete Finalists will be recognized at an awards ceremony May 5 at the Jefferson Street Inn in Wausau. Each Scholar Athlete will receive a medallion and certificate, as well as a special plaque to display in their school’s trophy case.
The ceremony can be watched online at www.wiaawi.org beginning at 1 p.m. May 5.
