A house in Barnes was a complete loss after a fire early Thursday morning.
The Bayfield County Communications Center received a radio report around 6 a.m. concerning the fire at 3515 County Highway N.
The owners of the house, Richard and Wendy Downey, were outside in the garage when they observed smoke coming from the peak of their home.
The Downey’s went to the house, removed their dogs and left the residence. They located a neighbor on the roadway and informed him that their house was on fire. The neighbor then used a radio to contact the communications center and the Barnes Fire Department was paged to respond to the scene.
Upon arrival of the first unit, there was heavy smoke coming out of the house and flame from the west window.
Fire fighters performed initial attack at window knocking the fire down allowing firefighters time to make entry from the front door and extinguishing the remaining fire.
The fire department used about 1,200 gallons of water. At the time of the fire, there was no power to the house. The homeowners reported they had candles going and a propane stove. The fire appeared to have started near a patio door to the right side of it. The cause of fire remains under investigation. The fire Department spent four hours on scene.
Because of heavy smoke and heat damage the house is a complete loss.
Responding to the scene along with the Barnes Fire and Ambulance was fire departments from Drummond, Highland and Iron River.
The Grandview board up team assisted in boarding the residence up to help preserve personal property.
The Fire Department also wishes to thank the Barnes and Bayfield County highway departments assisted by promptly plowing roads so the fire departments could get to the scene, according to Barnes Fire Chief Thomas Renz.
