Yellowjackets swap sweeps with TitansUWS softball team wins first two WIAC games
One day after getting swept in a doubleheader by UW-Oshkosh by combined scores of 41-6 and allowing 42 hits, the University of Wisconsin-Superior baseball team turned the tables on the 24th-ranked Titans with wins of 8-5 and 6-1 Sunday afternoon at Tiedemann Field in Oshkosh.
In Sunday’s opener, which was delayed for 74 minutes due to blowing snow, Tyler Duex has three singles, including a two-run hit in the second inning that gave the Yellowjackets a 4-0 lead.
UWS also got three singles from both Jeff Miller and Robbie Veith.
Dan Genrich got the win after allowing five runs on eight hits in five innings. He struck out three. Travis Elwood pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings before yielding to Michael Doescher, who was credited with his second save of the year.
With the help of three hits and two hit batters, UWS scored four runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-1 lead in game two.
Yellowjacket starting pitcher Cody Johnson struck out nine batters in recording the complete-game win. Only four Oshkosh runners reached third base.
At the plate the Yellowjackets had nine hits, led by Tom Fairbanks, Sam Holden and Wyatt Soderquist who all had two hits. Soderquist and Holden also had two RBIs and Tony Remund scored three times in the game.
On Saturday, Oshkosh piled up 41 runs for a pair of runaway, 20-2 and 21-5.
Oshkosh had eight extra-base hits in the opener and Zac Peterson hit two of the team’s five two-run homers in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Titans scored four runs in the second inning, six in the third and eight in the seventh. Tyler Kamps tied a WIAC record with three doubles and totaled six RBIs.
Oshkosh smashed 22 hits in the next game, with Doug Beattie and Bobby Kachel connecting for two-run blasts in an eight-run first inning.
UWS (14-15, 7-7) is back in action with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Wednesday at UW-La Crosse.

The UWS softball team won its first two games in league play with wins of 4-0 and 13-6 over UW-Platteville Saturday at the Omni Center in Onalaska.
No further information was available from the doubleheader sweep.
The Yellowjackets’ doubleheader Sunday at UW-La Crosse was postponed due to inclement weather. A make-up date for the games will be announced soon.
UWS is scheduled to play doubleheaders Friday at La Crosse, Saturday at UW-Stout and Sunday at UW-River Falls.
