One person is dead following a Monday morning house fire at 53 Billings Drive in Superior.
Battalion Chief Vern Johnson with the Superior Fire Department confirmed in a Monday afternoon email that one civilian was inside the structure. The victim of the blaze was Jean Sweeney, a retired music teacher.
Firefighters were called to the single-family residence at 11:10 a.m. When they got there, the fire had already spread to the attic of the two-story house.
“By all indications, on our arrival that fire had been burning for quite some time,” Johnson said.
All three engine crews and the battalion chief responded to the fire. Firefighters were able to make entry several different times in attempt to see if anyone was in the home, but the structure was quite unsafe because the fire had such a head start, Johnson said.
It was his understanding that a neighbor noticed flame in the windows and called 911.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. No damage estimate was available by press time.
