Gina Dixon was named program manager for Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Grief Services.

The Grief Support Services program is a national model for grief and bereavement programs, offering counseling, support groups, volunteer services and education to people of all ages affected by a life-threatening illness or the death of a loved one.

Dixon, a licensed psychologist, joined St. Mary’s Grief Support Services in 1994 and worked for 18 years as a grief therapist and volunteer coordinator before moving into the new leadership role. She will continue to work as a grief therapist.

Dixon holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Superior and a master’s degree in educational psychology and counseling from the University of Minnesota Duluth. Dixon has specialized training in group crisis intervention and in trauma and loss affecting children and adolescents.

“Our mission is to support grieving people, provide education regarding common grief responses and offer resources for developing new coping skills,” Dixon said. “I take a holistic approach to grief, being mindful of the spiritual, social, emotional and physical needs of those who are grieving as well as for the professionals and community members who are providing support.”

Dixon was recently elected to the Association for Death Education and Counseling Board of Directors. This spring, she’ll serve the international organization as second vice president.
