Mentor Superior board elects officers

Mentor Superior was founded recently to assist youth in their development into healthy and contributing members of society by offering mentoring programs that foster relationships with positive adult role models. Mentor Superior is part of a collaboration of six youth-serving agencies, which include the Duluth Area Family YMCA, Boys & Girls Club of the Northland, Copeland Valley Youth Center, Neighborhood Youth Services, Proctor Hermantown Community Education, and YWCA of Duluth.

Strengthened by 70 years of mentoring experience, the program is dedicated to matching positive adult role models with children ages 5-17.

Members of a Mentor Superior Advisory Committee recently elected officers. They include:

Ryan Yingling, president, a 1999 WITC graduate who earned an associate degree in marketing and bachelor’s degree in 2004 in business administration from the University of Wisconsin-Superior. He is the general manager with Screen Graphics and Uniform Connection.

Chris Bronson, treasurer, is a lifelong Superior resident who earned an accounting degree from UWS in 1988. He worked for 13 years in the solid waste industry, and was founder and former owner of Nordic Waste Services Inc. He now works as the internal auditor for the city of Superior.

Julie Schmidt, secretary, coordinates the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness program at Superior Middle School, a partnership between UWS and the Superior school district. Julie recruits and hires UWS college students to serve as tutors and mentors for a select group of adolescents at the middle school. Julie earned her master’s degree in school counseling from UWS in 2010.
