Corey Mathiassen, 92, Superior area resident, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Harmony House II in Superior.

Corey Mathiassen, 92, Superior area resident, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Harmony House II in Superior.

He was born on Feb. 8, 1921, in Sortland, Norway to Albert and Laura Mathiassen

Corey served his country in the United States Army during World War II.

He was employed as an Optometrist Optician for Twin Ports Optical for many years.

Corey married Jean Jackson on Oct. 18, 1947, and celebrated 65 years of marriage.

He was a longtime active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. He was a founding member of the Superior Evening Lions Club where he was the chair of various committees and was instrumental in delivering eyeglasses to needy children throughout his career and served as president. He also was the director of the former Superior Amateur Boxing Association.

Corey loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing the Brule River. He enjoyed coaching baseball in his younger years and taught Pee Wee and Women's softball.

Corey is survived by his wife, Jean; two daughters, Mary Ellen (Dan) Hunter, Richfield, Minn. and Jean Anne (Rick) Larsen, Superior; one son, Andrew Mathiassen, Superior; grandchildren, Sarah Cheatham, Maren Schumacher, Emma Hunter Lindsy Groskreutz, Matthew, Steven and Michael Larsen and William Hunter; 11 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Richard W. Jackson; several nieces and nephews with one direct niece in Norway and a great niece and great nephew.

He is preceded in death by an infant daughter Sarah Jean, his parents and brothers and sisters Alma, Petra, Magnus, Aslaug, Trygve, Sverre, Hildur, and Olav.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 1924 Wyoming Avenue, Superior and continue until the 6 p.m. memorial service with Rev. Sarah Kerkes officiating.

Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior is assisting the family with arrangements.
