UWS baseball team drops pair to Augsburg

The University of Wisconsin-Superior baseball team opened its season Wednesday at the Metrodome in Minneapolis with a matinee doubleheader against Augsburg College.

The Auggies swept the doubleheader from the Yellowjackets with wins of 7-2 and 5-1. Both games were seven innings.

UWS (0-2) had six hits in the opener, two by Wyatt Soderquist and one each by Jeff Miller, Tom Fairbanks and Shawn Lanners. Fairbanks had an BRI single in the fourth inning and Soderquist knocked in a run with a single in the fifth.

Augsburg (3-1) scored five of its seven runs in the first inning off UWS starting pitcher Travis Elwood. The Auggies also score twice in the fifth inning off Yellowjacket pitcher Graham Miller.

The Yellowjackets had five hits in game two, including two by Tony Remund and one each by Soderquist, Brady Flaherty and Tyler Duex.

Superior’s run came in the fourth inning when Duex’s single down the right-field line plated Remund, who reached in an infield single.

Augsburg scored four runs in the fourth inning and one run in the fifth.

Dan Genrich suffered the loss on the mound for UWS, allowing four runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings. He also walked three and struck out three before being relieved by Cody Johnson, Alex Beers and Kyle Gauger.

Gordon Kappers had two runs, two hits and two RBIs to lead Augsburg in the opener and Tyler Flakne pitched four strong innings to lead Augsburg (3-1) in the second game

UWS will play St. John’s in a doubleheader in the Metrodome at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 14. The Yellowjackets’ spring trip to Arizona runs from March 16-23.
