Inmate dies at Douglas County Jail

On Friday, an inmate at the Douglas County Jail suffered a catastrophic medical incident and died as a result.

Dead is Clifton G. Walker, age 37.

Walker reported to other inmates he was not feeling well and was going to lie down, according to a release from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department. He was later found to be in distress, paramedics were summoned and corrections officers began first aid. Walker stopped breathing and officers initiated CPR until paramedics arrived. Efforts to revive Walker were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was performed Saturday, March 2 in Anoka County, Minn. Preliminary results indicate massive internal bleeding due to a perforated ulcer that ruptured an artery in the stomach lining. The jail was not informed Walker had any medical issues or pre-existing conditions, according to Douglas County Sheriff Tom Dalbec, and he was not on any medication.

According to online court records, Clifton Germaine Walker, 37, was facing two counts of delivery of heroin in Douglas County Circuit Court stemming from a Feb. 14 incident. Cash bail of $2,000 was set for the case during his initial appearance Feb. 26. The online records do not indicate that the bail was paid.

Walker’s death remains under investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin Department of Corrections.

“We’re waiting for toxicology results from the autopsy,” Dalbec said.
