A 43-year-old man from Illinois was killed in Wisconsin’s Iron County
while operating a snowmobile late Saturday afternoon.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Iron County
Sheriff’s Office reported that two men from Illinois were snowmobiling
toward each other on Trail 10A near Popko Circle West in the Town of
Mercer when they collided at a crest in the trail around 5 p.m.
The man from Bloomington, Ill., was pronounced dead at Howard Young
Medical Center in Woodruff. His 42-year-old companion, from Hoffman
Estates, Ill., was treated on the scene for non-life threatening
injuries.
The names of the men are not being released until relatives have been
notified, the sheriff’s office said. Assisting the department and the
DNR was Mercer Fire Department and ambulance crews.
The DNR and sheriff’s office reported that excessive speed was likely
a factor in the accident. It was the 18th fatal snowmobile accident in
Wisconsin this winter. The accident remains under investigation.
