Northwestern helps claim state hockey title

MADISON — The Hayward co-op girls hockey team won the 2013 WIAA Girls High School Hockey State Championship on Saturday with a 5-2 win over the Onalaska co-op at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.
The Hayward co-op team, which consists of players from Hayward, Spooner and Northwestern, advanced to the finals with a 6-2 semifinal win over the University School of Milwaukee co-op on Friday.
In Friday’s win, Madeline Spangenberg of Northwestern scored a goal for the Lady Canes.
Senior teammate Meredith Ingbretson had a hat trick in the championship game and totaled four goals in the final two games. Goalie Sarah Miley had 21 saves.
Theresa Knutson scored her 76th and 77th goals of the season for Onalaska in the loss.
Both Onalaska and USM had defeated Hayward during the regular season, but coach Scott Turnbull’s Lady Canes (22-4-1) turned the tables on them in the state tournament.
Tournament MVP
Hayward/Spooner/Northwestern defenseman Holly Turnbull was named the girls’ tournament MVP. The sophomore had a goal and two assists and a +/- rating of four, which led the tournament.
