Superior students earn awards for toothpick bridge designs
High school engineers from Superior earned two awards for their toothpick bridges during the 2013 Toothpick Bridge Contest, which was held Tuesday at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
High school engineers from Superior earned two awards for their toothpick bridges during the 2013 Toothpick Bridge Contest, which was held Tuesday at the University of Minnesota Duluth. The Superior team of Ian Bass, Noah Peterson, Mike Hinaus and Cody Anderson placed second in the most aesthetically pleasing category. Hermantown’s Breanna Hoff was number one and Anthony Schultz of Bayfield earned the third place spot in that category.
A third-place award for the most economical bridge design went to the Superior team of Paige Ford, Hannah Nelson and Max Dahl. Their 43.2 gram bridge held 14.42 kilograms of weight. Duluth East’s Derek Nelson earned the top spot in the category, with Derek Deragon of Bayfield snagging the second place award.
All three top spots in the strongest bridge category were taken by Duluth East students. Carlie Breland’s bridge held 54.22 kilograms. Henry Loomis’s bridge held 44.7 kilograms and a bridge built by Alayna Baker and Shay Donovan held 38.12 kilograms.
