The generosity of people living in northern Wisconsin is bringing improvements to the northernmost veterans’ cemetery in Wisconsin this year.

“We’re going to be expanding our Spooner cemetery, adding columbariums,” said Tom Rhatican, administrator of the Division of Veterans Benefits with the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs.

Rhatican attributes northern Wisconsin’s generosity as the reason for the expansion.

“There are some very generous donations to the Spooner cemetery from the northern Wisconsin area, disproportionately high,” Rhatican said. “There will be a bunch of improvements coming up in the next year just because of the donations.”

He said that will translate into a lot of nice amenities at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner.
