Gymnasts win finale, gear up for sectionals

The Superior High School gymnastics team finished off its regular season with a win Feb. 14 in Grantsburg.

The Spartan girls claimed a 131.35-128.70 victory over Grantsburg in the team competition and had a number of gymnasts place individually.

“I am so thrilled to say they had another awesome meet,” said SHS assistant coach Lynda Ritsche. “I hope they can keep this up for sectionals.”

Superior competes in the WIAA Division 1 sectionals at Chippewa Falls this weekend. Competition begins at 11 a.m. Saturday. The top five gymnasts in each individual event and the top five all-around gymnasts advance to state. The state meet is March 1-2 in Wisconsin Rapids.

In Grantsburg, three Spartan girls placed in the all-around standings. Giselle Sziron took second, Jessica Engstrom finished fourth and Dawn Ferfon finished fifth.

Sziron, who has not competed on beam most of this season, finished second on floor and beam and third on vault and bars. Engstrom took third on floor, fourth on bars and vault and fifth on beam; and Ferfon took fourth on floor and fifth on bars. Also for Superior, Tay Boykin placed third on beam, and Holly Bayless took fourth on both vault and beam.
