Superior man faces prisoner assault charge

A jailed Superior man was bound over for arraignment for allegedly beating up a fellow prisoner.

Sean Richard Sanigar, 23, faces one count felony battery by prisoners. He waived his preliminary hearing in Douglas County Circuit Court earlier this month and is scheduled for arraignment March 18.

According to the criminal complaint:

The victim, Timothy Griffin, said he attended church services at the Douglas County Jail on Jan. 20. While there, he saw a man who had been a co-defendant during a recent burglary trial. The other man, who received a much heavier sentence than Griffin, was seen talking with Sanigar. Later that day, Sanigar and another man approached Griffin in his cell asking questions about the burglary case. They came into his cell and, at one point, Sanigar attacked Griffin, punching him repeatedly in the head, neck and back.

According to online court records, Sanigar was placed on probation in June 2011 after pleading no contest to uttering a forgery, but his probation was revoked in January. According to the case file, Sanigar had an imposed and stayed prison sentence that would be triggered upon revocation of probation — 18 months confinement and 12 months extended supervision.

Sanigar is also facing a felony charge of drive or operate vehicle without consent in a separate case. The arraignment for that case is also set for March 18.
